What's the difference between highlights and balayage at Rogue?
Highlights and balayage at Rogue Salon add brightness and dimension, from face framing pieces to full foils and hand painted balayage. Foils give brighter, more even lift, while balayage is painted freehand for a softer grow out. It suits you if you want sun kissed color in Oceanport without a harsh regrowth line.
Who are highlights and balayage for?
Lightening suits you if your color feels flat or one note. Brightness around your face can wake up your skin. Dimension through the lengths makes hair look thicker and healthier.
Near the shore, lots of guests want that just back from the beach look all year. Balayage gives it to you with less upkeep. Foils give a brighter, more polished blonde. Brunettes get in on it too, with caramel or golden pieces that keep the base rich.
Which lightening services are on the menu?
- Face Frame Sun Kissed Highlights. Brightness placed around the face.
- Partial Highlights. Foils through the top and sides.
- Full Highlights. Foils throughout for all over brightness.
- Full Highlights & Lowlights. Brightness and depth woven together.
- Partial Balayage. Hand painted color through the top.
- Balayage. Hand painted color for a soft grow out.
Every lightening service is priced by stylist level. Five of them are also on our apprentice menu at a lower rate. Highlights and lowlights is the one you'll only find on the standard menu. Current prices for all six are on our Service Menu.
How does a highlight or balayage appointment work?
- Consultation. We read your natural level, your goal, and how much upkeep you want to sign up for.
- Placement. Your colorist weaves foils or paints lightener by hand, putting brightness where light hits your hair.
- Lightening. The lightener processes under close watch, and we check the lift as it goes.
- Tone. We rinse, then tone and often glaze for the exact shade, from icy to golden.
- Finish. A blow dry shows you the full result. We can add a shadow root, root tap, or blur for a softer line.
How long do highlights and balayage last?
Balayage can often stretch three to four months, because the painted placement grows out softly. Foiled highlights usually refresh every six to ten weeks, since the line at the root shows sooner.
Sun and salt water can warm up blonde over a summer. Rinse after swimming, and use a heat protectant before hot tools. A Color or Clear Glaze between lightening visits brings tone back without lifting again.
Foils or balayage: which should you choose?
Choose foils if you want bright, even blonde from root to ends. Full Highlights and Lowlights add depth back in, so a light blonde doesn't look washed out.
Choose balayage if you want a lived in look and fewer visits. Partial Balayage paints just the top, and it's a good first step if you're new to lightening. Not sure? Maria, our Master Stylist, leads our lightening work. She specializes in hand painted color, balayage, and blonding that grows out beautifully. Highlights & Balayage questions
What are Face Frame Sun Kissed Highlights?
They're brightness placed only around your face, where the sun would naturally lighten your hair. It's the smallest lightening service on our menu. It works well as a first step into blonde, or as a quick brighten between full highlight or balayage visits.
Why add lowlights to full highlights?
Lowlights weave darker pieces back in between the bright ones. That adds depth, so a heavily highlighted head doesn't look flat or washed out. Full Highlights and Lowlights is a good pick if your blonde has gotten too light over time.
Will lightening damage my hair?
Any lightener changes the hair, so we work carefully and watch the lift as it processes. We'll always tell you what your hair can safely handle in one visit. If your goal needs more than one appointment, we'll plan it in stages.
What is a shadow root or root tap?
Both soften the line where your lightened hair meets your roots. A shadow root or root tap adds a deeper tone at the base, so regrowth blends in. It's a good way to stretch time between appointments, especially with brighter foiled highlights.
Can I get balayage at an apprentice rate?
Yes. Partial Balayage and Balayage are on our apprentice menu, along with Face Frame, Partial, and Full Highlights. Each has an Apprentice and an Advanced apprentice rate. A senior stylist checks the apprentice's work as it goes.
