Hair Salon Serving West Long Branch, NJ

West Long Branch is about nine minutes from us by road, and it is a university town, which changes the mix of what gets booked. We see Monmouth University students, faculty and staff, plus the year-round residents who were here long before the campus grew into what it is now.

Student and faculty work, honestly framed

Two very different budgets, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

For students, the apprentice program is the honest recommendation. Supervised services at a reduced rate means a real cut or blowout without the price of a senior stylist. Nobody should go into debt over a haircut, and a supervised apprentice at a salon that trains properly is a better outcome than a box of lightener in a dorm bathroom.

For faculty and staff, low-maintenance grey blending is usually the better option than full coverage. Blending reads as intentional, grows out softly, and does not put you on a rigid four-week cycle. If you have been doing full coverage by default, it is worth a conversation about whether you need to be.

Campus events and the Great Hall

The Great Hall at Shadow Lawn is the landmark here and it is genuinely remarkable. It was built in 1929 for about $10.5 million as a private house for Hubert Templeton Parson, then president of F.W. Woolworth. Horace Trumbauer designed it with his assistant Julian Abele, the first African-American professional architect in the country. It uses Indiana limestone from the same quarry as the Empire State Building and fifty varieties of Italian marble, and it has 130 rooms across its main floors. It went on the National Register in 1978 and was made a National Historic Landmark in 1985. It also played the mansion in the 1982 film of Annie.

It hosts a lot of formal events, and formal events mean updos. Graduation week and gala nights are the two times a year our event book fills from this town specifically, so plan around those.

What we would suggest for a first visit

  • If you have never had professional color, start with a gloss rather than highlights. It is lower commitment, it shows you what a tonal change looks like on you, and it washes out rather than growing out.
  • If your hair is long and has never been cut properly, expect us to want to take more off than you want to give. We will tell you why and then do what you agree to.
  • If you are booking for an event, bring a photo but be ready for us to say what part of it is achievable on your hair. That is the useful part of the conversation.

The campus is not only the Great Hall. Hesse Field on the Great Lawn sits in its shadow and carries the athletic calendar, which is its own driver of event hair across a season. Between athletics, graduation and the formal events the Great Hall hosts, this town has more dress-up dates per year than its size suggests.

Moving here, or moving away

University towns turn over. If you are new to the area and looking for someone to take over hair that somebody else has been maintaining, bring whatever you know: the brand of color, the formula if you have it, the last date, and a photo from when you liked it most. If you are leaving and want to hand your formula to a stylist somewhere else, ask us and we will write it down for you. That should be standard everywhere and it is not.

About the salon

Rogue opened in 2016. Sharon and Brittani, mother and daughter, own it and both work the floor. Eleven stylists, each with their own page on this site. We do hair and nails in the same building, so both can happen in one visit. The apprentice program is supervised, not unattended.

Getting here

Cedar Ave or Monmouth Road to Oceanport Ave. Three miles, about nine minutes from campus. We are at 700 Oceanport Ave, Suite 712, in the RiverWalk Center at Fort Monmouth, and parking is a free surface lot.
