Tinton Falls is a short drive west of us, and it has more genuine history per square mile than almost anywhere else in Monmouth County. Most people who live there do not know the half of it.
The falls, and the rest of it
The falls on Pine Brook that the town is named for are the highest natural falls on the entire coastal plain of New Jersey. Not the highest in the state, but the highest across the whole flat coastal region, which is a more interesting distinction than it sounds.
The Tinton Falls Historic District holds roughly twenty-one points of historic and archaeological interest. Among them: nine old residences, the site of one of the earliest ironworks in colonial America, the site of the mansion of the first Colonial Governor of New Jersey, an early applejack distillery, a seventeenth century grist mill, a mineral spring, an early blacksmith shop, the sites of two early hotels, and the site of an attempted airplane flight in 1910.
The Crawford House is the anchor. It sheltered four generations of the Crawford family, who ran a butcher shop out of it for a century, and it now runs tours and exhibits.
Why we bring up the mineral spring
Not just for color. Parts of Tinton Falls sit on well water or supply with a higher mineral load, and mineral content genuinely affects hair color. Iron and copper in water bind to the hair shaft and can turn blonde tones dull, brassy or faintly green, and it usually shows up a week or two after an appointment rather than in the chair.
Clients often assume the color was mixed wrong. Usually it was not. A chelating treatment before a color service pulls the mineral buildup out so the formula lands where it should. The commute question
A lot of Tinton Falls households have someone commuting on the North Jersey Coast Line or up the Parkway, and the rest of the family working locally. About the salon
Rogue opened in 2016. Sharon and Brittani, a mother and daughter, own it and both still take clients. There are eleven stylists and each one has a page on this site, so you can read about someone and ask for them by name instead of being assigned whoever is free. Hair and nails are done in the same building, so a manicure can happen while color processes. We also run an apprentice program, where apprentices take real clients at a reduced rate under supervision.
