Hair Salon Serving Rumson, NJ

Rumson sits on a peninsula with the Navesink on one side and the Shrewsbury on the other. It is just under six miles from our chair, about twelve minutes, and color and extension work generally runs on a six to eight week cycle, so the length of that drive is worth knowing before you commit to it.

We should be clear about one thing up front: we are not a Rumson salon. We are in Oceanport, at 700 Oceanport Ave in the RiverWalk Center at Fort Monmouth. We say that plainly because the drive matters when you are booking a four hour appointment.

The brackish water problem

If your back yard is the Navesink, your hair spends the summer in brackish water. Brackish is harder on color than a pool, because the salt does the drying and there is no chlorine smell to warn you it is happening. Rumson is a boating town and a tennis town, so most of our clients here are in sun and salt from May through September.

Two habits help more than any bottle of product:

  • Rinse with fresh water before you get in the river, not after. Hair that is already saturated absorbs less of whatever it is sitting in.
  • Come in for a gloss around the four week mark in summer, even if the highlights still look fine. Tone goes before lift does, and a gloss is a fraction of the time of a full appointment.

We build sun and salt exposure into the formula rather than pretending it is not happening. If you tell us you are on the water four days a week, that changes what we mix.

The work this town's conditions call for

Dimensional blonde. Balayage, foilyage, and lived-in highlights that grow out without a hard line. The goal for most of our Rumson clients is a grow-out you can live with for three months, not six weeks.

Extensions. No-show wefts, I-tips, K-tips and tape-ins, all in one hundred percent human hair. Extensions are the service where the drive is most worth it, because fit matters more than convenience. A weft installed to the wrong head shape moves, snags and comes out early. We consult first, every time, before anything is ordered.

Event hair and the club calendar

The Sea Bright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club, founded in 1878, sits in Rumson and is on the National Register as the oldest club of its type in continued use in the country. Bingham Hall on Bingham Avenue is the oldest building in the borough, put up in 1842 as the Port Washington Church, the town's interdenominational church until 1886, restored in 2005 and now the borough community center.

We mention both for a practical reason. Club season and Bingham Hall events mean updos and blowouts, and event hair books out. If you have something on the calendar, give us more than a week.

One more thing about the town that is relevant to hair. Rumson has spent decades building a reputation for its landscaping and its architecture, and the business district stayed compact and walkable rather than turning into a strip. That means appointments here are often bundled with other errands on foot, which is worth saying out loud: if you are heading somewhere afterward, tell us, and we will finish you accordingly rather than sending you out mid-process.

Who you would be sitting with

Rogue was opened in 2016 by Sharon and Brittani, a mother and daughter who still both work the floor. There are eleven of us, and you can read about each stylist before you book rather than being assigned to whoever is open. We also run an apprentice program, so if you want a blowout or a simpler service at a reduced rate with a supervised apprentice, that is a real option here.

Getting here from Rumson

Rumson Road to Route 35 south, then Oceanport Ave. We are in Suite 712 of the RiverWalk Center, the same building as Playa Bowls and Broadway Chicken. Parking is a free surface lot, which is not nothing if you have circled Broad Street in Red Bank looking for a spot.

Services Rumson clients ask for

Book

Consultations for extensions, color correction and smoothing are free, and we would rather do one than guess at your hair's history.
