Hair Salon Serving Monmouth Beach, NJ

Monmouth Beach is the smallest town we serve and one of the most exposed. It sits on a narrow strip with the Atlantic on one side and the Shrewsbury River on the other, which means there is essentially nowhere in the borough that is not getting salt air.

Living on a barrier spit, hair-wise

The Sea Bright to Monmouth Beach seawall runs about 4.7 miles along that strip between the ocean and the river estuary. If you live behind it, your hair is in salt air year-round, not just when you go to the beach. That is different from a town two miles inland and it needs a different plan.

What salt air this constant tends to do:

  • Toner fading faster than it should. Sun and salt both eat toner. Blondes here need a gloss more often than blondes inland, and it is cheaper and quicker than correcting brassiness later.
  • Dryness at the mid-shaft, not the ends. Slightly unusual and it is the wind. Hair whipping against itself all year roughens the cuticle where it moves most.
  • Product buildup from heavy conditioning. People fight dryness with more conditioner, which coats rather than repairs and eventually makes color grab unevenly. Sometimes the right answer is a clarifying treatment and a lighter routine, not more product.

Smoothing, with a caveat

Humidity off both the ocean and the river makes smoothing treatments popular here, and we do keratin, Brazilian Blowout and Magic Sleek. The caveat is that heavily lightened hair plus a smoothing service plus constant salt exposure is a lot to ask of one head of hair. If you are blonde and on the water, we will sometimes recommend spacing those services further apart than you would like. We would rather tell you that than take the booking and watch the condition go.

The Cultural Center

The Monmouth Beach Cultural Center is housed in the original 1896 United States Life-Saving Service station, built for the crews who watched this shoreline and went out to ships in distress. It runs art exhibits and workshops and is open Saturdays from ten to one. For a town this size, having a working nineteenth century life-saving station as its arts venue is a genuinely unusual thing.

The practical note: local events at the Cultural Center and along the river generate event hair requests, and because the borough is small those cluster on the same dates. If there is something on, book early.

Geography also limits what is nearby. The borough is narrow enough that there is no real commercial strip inside it, so almost everything, salons included, is a short drive out. That is worth factoring in when you book a longer service: the trip is part of the appointment here in a way it is not for an inland town.

Sailing, kayaking and appointment timing

The river side is where most people are actually on the water. If you sail or paddle regularly, tell us which days, because there is no point in us putting you in a style that assumes you are not going to be soaked twice a week. We would rather build the cut and color around your actual life than the one on the inspiration photo.

About the salon

Rogue opened in 2016. Sharon and Brittani, a mother and daughter, own it and both still take clients. There are eleven stylists and each one has a page on this site, so you can read about someone and ask for them by name instead of being assigned whoever is free. Hair and nails are done in the same building, so a manicure can happen while color processes. We also run an apprentice program, where apprentices take real clients at a reduced rate under supervision.

Getting here

Ocean Ave to Route 36 west, then Oceanport Ave. Four and a half miles, about eleven minutes. We are at 700 Oceanport Ave, Suite 712, in the RiverWalk Center at Fort Monmouth, with a free surface lot.
