If the tape has slipped more than an inch, the adhesive has failed and the weft has been rubbing against itself and your natural hair for too long. The friction causes matting at the root, and matting pulls and breaks your natural hair when we try to remove it. At that point we recommend replacing the wefts rather than reinstalling them, because the damage to your natural hair is not worth saving a set of extensions that are already compromised.
Tape adhesive does not recover once it has absorbed salt or chlorine. You cannot dry it out and expect it to restick. Keratin bonds oxidize when exposed to chlorine and UV. The bond turns from smooth and flexible to hard and brittle, and once that happens it cannot be softened back. Braid the hair before you swim. A tight braid keeps the extension hair from tangling and spreading out in the water, which reduces the surface area exposed to salt and chlorine. Braid it wet or dry, but make sure the braid is secure from root to ends.
Rinse with fresh water immediately after swimming. Do not wait until you get home. Most shore bathrooms have outdoor showers. Rinse the braid thoroughly to flush the salt and chlorine out before it dries into the hair. The longer salt sits on the hair, the more moisture it pulls out.
Apply a leave-in conditioner or a silicone-based serum before you swim. A light coating of product creates a barrier between the hair and the water. It does not make the hair waterproof, but it slows down how much salt and chlorine penetrate the hair shaft. Reapply after rinsing.
